Goal III.a
Students analyze, organize and describe various formats of information objects.
Artifact 1 - Your Guide to Clever (LibGuide)
Artifact Overview
For this assignment, I created a LibGuide titled Your Guide to Clever to support elementary teachers in navigating the district’s digital resources available through the Clever portal. The guide organizes instructional applications into clear categories, explains the purpose of each resource in teacher-friendly language, and provides login information, troubleshooting tips, and suggestions for classroom integration. The goal was to create a practical reference tool that teachers could use to quickly locate and understand the digital resources available to them.
This artifact aligns with Goal III.a because it demonstrates the organization and description of information objects within a structured information system. The LibGuide connects users to a variety of digital resources, each serving different instructional purposes, while presenting them in a consistent, accessible format. By organizing these resources according to their function and intended audience, the guide makes complex information systems easier to navigate and supports efficient access to relevant information.
Artifact 2: Metadata Assignment
Artifact Overview
For this assignment, I designed a metadata schema for motion pictures using established standards including Dublin Core and Schema.org. I selected appropriate metadata elements, determined whether each should be required or repeatable, justified those decisions, and then applied the schema by creating a complete metadata record for The Godfather. The project emphasized the role of standardized metadata in supporting resource description, discovery, and consistent information retrieval.
This artifact aligns with Goal III.a because it demonstrates my understanding of how metadata standards structure information resources for discovery and access. Rather than simply applying an existing schema, I evaluated which descriptive elements were most appropriate for the resource, justified my design decisions, and implemented the schema in a practical example. The assignment strengthened my understanding of how metadata supports consistent organization and user access across information systems.
Artifact 3 - Personal Digital Taxonomy
Artifact Overview
For this assignment, I designed a comprehensive taxonomy to organize my personal digital information environment. The taxonomy included hierarchical categories covering entertainment, personal records, financial documents, work materials, educational records, and email, while also incorporating facets such as sensitivity, source, and file format to improve retrieval. I accompanied the taxonomy with a detailed rationale explaining the organizational principles behind the system and how it reflects real-world patterns of information use and retrieval.
This artifact aligns with Goal III.a because it demonstrates my ability to organize complex collections of information using both hierarchical classification and faceted organization. Rather than creating a purely theoretical system, I designed a practical taxonomy that balances logical structure with user-centered retrieval. The project illustrates my understanding that effective knowledge organization must support not only consistent classification but also the ways users actually seek, browse, and retrieve information over time.
