Copyright Professional Development

Related Learning Outcome

I.b. Students demonstrate effective communication skills.

Artifact Overview

This professional development presentation was created as a practical copyright guide for teachers. The presentation explains why copyright matters in schools, clarifies the difference between copyright and fair use, introduces the four fair use factors, and addresses common myths such as assuming that anything used for education is automatically allowed. It also identifies risky practices, such as showing movies as rewards or copying consumable materials, while offering safer alternatives connected to direct instruction, commentary, critique, analysis, licensed resources, public domain materials, and Creative Commons materials.

I selected this artifact for Outcome I.b because it demonstrates effective professional communication. The assignment required me to take a topic that can easily become dry, confusing, or overly legalistic and present it in a way that would be useful to teachers. The presentation uses clear language, practical examples, and direct takeaways rather than overwhelming staff with legal detail. It demonstrates my ability to communicate professional guidance in a format that is accessible, relevant, and connected to everyday school practice, which is an important part of the media specialist’s instructional and leadership role.
